Australian coffee growers are gearing up for a promising 2026 harvest, fueled by the spectacular blooming of white, star-like flowers across coffee bushes in the country. This year's smaller-than-expected yield has given way to a renewed sense of optimism, with the Australian Grown Coffee Association president, Rebecca Zentveld, citing the best flowering in six years at her Newrybar farm near Byron Bay. The short-lived blossoms, lasting just two days, offer a multi-sensory experience for growers and visitors alike, with bees buzzing around and a sweet jasmine-like scent wafting through the air. The excitement is particularly high for a new coffee variety, Marsellesa, which is being trialed at the Zentveld farm and has produced more flowers than the Kenyan K7 trees. This dwarf variety, a hybrid of Sarchimor and Caturra developed in Nicaragua, is seen as a high-yielding, rust-resistant option that could be better suited to Australian conditions. The growing demand for locally grown beans, driven by specialty coffee roasters, has led to the industry's expansion within NSW, Queensland, and Western Australia. Fruit and nut farmers, in particular, are turning to coffee due to challenges in their respective industries, and professionals with experience in other agricultural sectors are also entering the coffee market.
