Following the fifth snowiest December on record—with nearly 45 cm of snow blanketing the city in its final days—the new year brought no reprieve. The result? Towering snow piles encroaching on parking spaces, even after initial clearing attempts. This week, however, city staff have ramped up efforts to reclaim these spaces, working tirelessly to haul away the accumulated snow. As Nicole Maione, director of community services, explains, ‘City parking lots are managed by a contractor through our transit department, and they’ve confirmed that snow removal in downtown areas is their top priority this week.’
And this is the part most people miss: the impact hasn’t just been on roads and parking—it’s been a full-blown disruption. Over the holidays, extreme weather conditions brought the local airport to a near standstill, grounding flights due to unsafe conditions. The first week of January offered little respite, with Dan Perri, director of public works, noting, ‘Since December 27, we’ve been in the throes of a significant weather event. The city has received over 90 cm of snow in the past seven days alone, with an additional 15 cm falling just this past Sunday night into Monday morning. That’s more than 100 cm of snow in just over a week.’
