Four years after seizing power with a promise of a return to civilian rule, Guinea's junta chief, Mamady Doumbouya, has been elected president. This surprising turn of events has sparked both celebration and controversy.
Doumbouya, who initially vowed not to seek office, secured a commanding 86.72% of the vote, according to the country's electoral commission. This victory came despite a boycott urged by the main opposition leaders, who were barred from running.
At 41 years old, Doumbouya faced seven other candidates, but the absence of key opposition figures significantly shaped the election's outcome. The election commission reported a voter turnout of 80.95%, with Doumbouya dominating in districts across the capital, Conakry, often exceeding 80% in those areas. His strong performance extended to other regions, including Coyah, Boffa, Fria, Gaoual, Koundara, Labe, and Nzerekore.
But here's where it gets controversial... A citizens' movement advocating for a return to civilian rule disputed the reported figures, claiming a significant boycott by Guineans.
Doumbouya's rise to power began in September 2021 when he led a coup, ousting Guinea's first freely elected president, Alpha Condé. Since then, civil liberties have been curtailed, protests banned, and opponents have faced arrest, trial, or exile. This raises questions about the fairness and transparency of the recent election.
Candidate Abdoulaye Yero Balde cited "serious irregularities" in the poll, while another candidate, Faya Millimono, alleged "electoral banditry." These accusations add fuel to the controversy surrounding the election's legitimacy.
And this is the part most people miss... In late September, Guineans approved a new constitution allowing junta members to run for office, paving the way for Doumbouya's candidacy. The new constitution also extended presidential terms from five to seven years, renewable once. The opposition leader and former prime minister, Cellou Dalein Diallo, was among those barred from running due to the new rules.
