Lakers Center Suspended for Unsportsmanlike Conduct
The Los Angeles Lakers' Jaxson Hayes was suspended for one game on Wednesday after a controversial incident with the Washington Wizards' mascot, G-Wiz, during the pre-game introductions. The incident occurred on Friday, where Hayes delivered a hip check to the mascot, an action that could be considered unprofessional and potentially harmful.
Despite the incident, Hayes contributed 10 points, three rebounds, and an assist as the Lakers won the game 142-111. However, the NBA has decided to penalize him for his actions, keeping him out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Hayes, a 7-foot center, was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in 2019 and later traded to the New Orleans Pelicans. He played four seasons with the Pelicans, averaging 7.5 points and 2.6 rebounds. He signed with the Lakers before the 2023-24 season and has been a key player for the team this season, averaging 6.4 points and 3.8 rebounds in 41 games.
The Lakers are currently in sixth place in the Western Conference, and the All-Star break is approaching. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
