A monument's sudden demolition has ignited a firestorm of controversy, leaving many questioning the motives behind this act.
This week, the world watched as a monument honoring the Chinese community in Panama was torn down, sparking outrage and raising serious questions about international relations. This act has become a focal point of tension, particularly as the United States attempts to influence Panama's relationship with China.
Overnight, excavators moved in, captured on social media, demolishing the monument. This structure, a symbol of 150 years of Chinese presence in Panama, was more than just stone and mortar; it was a tribute to the Chinese migrants who played a crucial role in building the Panama Canal and the railroads. The monument, erected in 2004, featured traditional Chinese architectural elements, including a ceremonial arch, curved roof tiles, and stone lions, and was situated at a scenic overlook near the Panama Canal.
By morning, all that remained were two broken stone lions. The Chinese Embassy in Panama didn't mince words, accusing local authorities of a 'brazen' demolition that 'seriously damaged the friendly sentiments of the Chinese people.' Xu Xueyuan, the Chinese ambassador, took to X, stating, 'This monument, which held 171 years of life, blood, and dedication from the Chinese community, has been shattered to pieces... And I ask: why?'
But here's where it gets controversial... The U.S. has been pressuring Panama to distance itself from China, with former President Donald Trump claiming China exerts control over the Panama Canal, despite the canal being managed by an independent authority. While Trump has provided little evidence, his administration has actively sought to counter China's growing economic influence in Latin America, where China's investments have surpassed those of the United States in recent years.
The local government, the Arraiján mayorship, claimed the demolition was due to 'structural risks,' denying any political motivations, yet offered no explanation for the nighttime execution of the demolition. Panama's President José Raúl Mulino condemned the demolition as 'barbarity' and announced the federal government would rebuild the monument, emphasizing the Chinese community's long-standing presence and contributions to the country. He stated, 'This is a traditional community in our country spanning back generations. They deserve all our respect. An investigation should be initiated immediately. Such an act of irrationality is unforgivable.'
And this is the part most people miss... The demolition has caused anger among both Panamanians and the Chinese community. Some members of the Chinese community protested at the site, while some businesses announced closures in protest. Jaime Bustos, a Panamanian tour guide, expressed his shock, highlighting the Chinese community's significant contributions to Panama's infrastructure and economy. He stated, 'I believe this was a cruel act.'
