Russia's Massive Drone & Missile Attack on Ukraine: Over 400 Launched (2026)

In a dramatic escalation of hostilities, Russia has unleashed a staggering arsenal of over 440 drones and missiles against Ukraine overnight, as revealed by officials in Kyiv on Saturday. This latest offensive represents one of Moscow's most significant long-range strikes targeting Ukrainian urban centers and vital infrastructure.

According to reports from Ukraine's air force, the assault included 408 drones and 39 missiles launched into Ukrainian airspace during the night leading into Saturday morning. Remarkably, the Ukrainian defense forces managed to intercept and neutralize a substantial portion of this attack, shooting down 382 drones and 24 missiles. Nonetheless, 21 drones and 13 missiles successfully struck 19 different locations throughout the country, as detailed in a communication posted on Telegram.

Tragically, the head of the Rivne regional military administration, Oleksandr Koval, confirmed that at least one individual lost their life, with two others sustaining injuries due to the Russian bombardment in the region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took to social media to express his outrage, noting that these attacks predominantly targeted the nation’s energy sector amidst an unforgiving winter. “Every day, Russia could choose real diplomacy, but it chooses new strikes,” he stated. Zelenskyy emphasized the urgency for global supporters of peace negotiations to respond decisively, insisting that Moscow must not be permitted to exploit the harsh winter conditions as a weapon against Ukraine.

Destruction was reported in multiple regions including Volyn, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, and Rivne, with significant damage inflicted on an apartment complex in Rivne and an agricultural college located in Ladyzhyn. Further strikes were also recorded in Kyiv and Kharkiv, according to Zelenskyy.

The state-owned electricity transmission operator, Ukrenergo, indicated that this marked the second major assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure within the calendar year. The strikes impacted energy facilities across eight regions, leading to reductions in output at all nuclear power plants situated in the affected areas. The International Atomic Energy Agency, which monitors nuclear safety, corroborated that Ukraine's nuclear facilities had to lower their output on Saturday morning due to renewed military actions that disrupted electrical substations and severed power lines.

In the Lviv region alone, more than 600,000 subscribers were without power as of Saturday morning, according to Maksym Kozytskyi, the head of the Lviv regional military administration. In response to the escalating threat, Poland's Armed Forces Operational Command announced that NATO warplanes were put on high alert, activating air defense systems and radar reconnaissance following the Russian strikes on Friday night. This defensive operation lasted approximately three hours and involved German fighter jets and Dutch air defenses, although no violations of Polish airspace were reported.

Additionally, the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency noted via social media that flight operations at two airports in Rzeszow and Lublin, located in southeastern Poland, were temporarily halted to allow military aviation to operate freely.

Despite recent trilateral discussions involving the U.S. in the United Arab Emirates aimed at de-escalation, both Kyiv and Moscow have continued to engage in long-range strikes. Russia's Defense Ministry claimed its forces took down at least 82 Ukrainian drones during the same overnight period.

While participants in the Abu Dhabi talks described the discussions as constructive, they did not yield a resolution on several contentious issues, including the status of Ukraine's partially occupied eastern Donbas region, post-war security guarantees from the West, and control over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant located in southern Ukraine.

On Friday, President Zelenskyy informed journalists that the United States has proposed hosting the next round of trilateral negotiations, potentially in Miami, within the upcoming week. "We have confirmed our participation," he stated, adding that the U.S. also suggested further steps toward de-escalating tensions in the energy sector, a proposal to which Kyiv has agreed, though Moscow's response remains pending. Notably, a temporary halt in energy-targeted strikes occurred last month, initiated at the request of U.S. President Donald Trump.

"The Americans are aiming for the conflict to conclude by early summer, and it seems they will likely exert pressure on the parties to adhere to this timeline," Zelenskyy remarked on Friday.
