Telstra Tower, a once-iconic landmark in Canberra, has become a symbol of neglect and missed opportunities. Ngunnawal elders, who have been advocating for its transformation into a cultural hub, claim that their vision is being overshadowed by commercial interests. The story of the tower's potential rebirth began in 2022 when Telstra engaged Deloitte Indigenous Services to develop a plan. The result was a reimagined tower, a 'Ngunnawal cultural tourism venue' with viewing platforms, dining, and educational programs. This vision had the backing of the ACT Chief Minister and a commitment to spend tens of millions of dollars. However, as the project progressed, the original cultural focus seemed to fade. In June 2024, a letter of intent was signed, and a year later, government funding was announced, but the Ngunnawal elements were notably absent. This sparked concern from Independent MLA Thomas Emerson and ACT senator David Pocock, who questioned the government and Telstra about the commitment to the Ngunnawal elders' vision. The elders, Uncle Richie Allan and Aunty Violet Sheridan, have been left feeling excluded and disappointed. They emphasize that the tower should be a cultural center first and foremost, honoring the Traditional Owners. The ACT Government, in response, acknowledges the importance of cultural engagement and promises continued collaboration with the Ngunnawal people. However, the final decision on the tower's design and future remains with Telstra, leaving the elders with a sense of uncertainty. As the project moves forward, the question remains: will the tower truly become a celebration of Ngunnawal culture, or will it be another missed opportunity?
